Clovis had been sweltering in the heat of the Brittanian heartland summer for days, with nothing to do and a profound inclination to do nothing in the oppressive heat he had not even brought himself to put brush to canvass for some time now. Of course with this profound languor came an equally deep seated boredom which, try as he might, Clovis could not motivate himself to amend. He supposed that his brother must have suffering under the weight of some similar affliction as he'd only that morning received an invitation to the Aries Villa. He arrived at about midday, excusing his escort as he entered and paused in the foyer to drink in the much more relaxing atmosphere. Much as he enjoyed the grandiose architecture of the Imperial Palace and of his mother's residence, he found the Aries Villa in its much more reserved, less deliberately imposing trappings to feel somewhat more homely than the others. It embodied a simple, unassuming grandeur that suited him well enough. He encountered few guards and attendants as he strode through the halls, with the Empress Marianne away the majority seemed to have followed her, he needed no directions nor guidance anyway as he knew quite well where his younger brother would be.
Entering the drawing room his eyes immediately found Lelouch and the chess board which sat in front of him, Clovis' lips curled at the corners into a wry smile as he approached and seated himself across from his brother, his rival in this matter. 'Ah, here you are again my dear sweet baby brother and how does the day find you?' He noted straight away that Lelouch had elected to play black, while another might have interpreted this as a courtesy of extending the first move and therefore likely the initiative to his guest, Clovis knew very well that to move second suited his brother's personality far better. To watch, to analyse, to react, to adapt, that was why Lelouch gave up that precious first strike. It grated on him somewhat that Lelouch wished to so cruelly dissect his own kin, but he knew that was just the kind of person he was. While Clovis had ever concerned himself with the physical and aesthetic, Lelouch was ever looking past to 'the world behind the world' expecting there to be an ulterior and undercurrent to every little thing. A most pitiable condition, he thought, but sort of adorable in its own way from one so young.
Reaching a hand forward he placed it tentatively on his king's pawn, but seemingly thought better of it when he realized it was Lelouch that he was up against. Instead he elected to move his queen's pawn up to D4, his eyes drifting to the open windows and the drapes which billowed gently in the soft breeze. His thoughts drifted as well to when they were all so much younger and when they used to play out on the green. Ah, but those were simpler days.
